John Pickering is a partner in Freehills’ Perth office. He practises in commercial and tax law.
Experience
John advises clients in relation to tax planning in connection with income tax, sales tax, GST, stamp duty and other miscellaneous taxes.
John also advises clients in relation to negotiations in connection with taxation audits and appears as counsel in taxation litigation in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and the Federal Court.
He advises many large corporations in relation to their taxation affairs, including a number of state trading bodies.
Professional background
John has a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from the Western Australian Institute of Technology, a Bachelor of Jurisprudence, a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws from the University of Western Australia. John was admitted to the partnership in 1994.
Before joining Freehills in 1988, John was in charge of the Appeals Branch of the Australian Taxation Office in Perth. For six years, he was the Convenor of the Taxation Practitioner's Committee of the Law Society of Western Australia, and has delivered a variety of papers on revenue laws to various forums. He was the foundation chairman and is a governor of the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children in Western Australia. He is also the chairman of the Western Australian Tax Agents Board.
