Bronwyn is a partner in the Litigation section of Freehills’ Melbourne practice.
Bronwyn’s practice encompasses a wide range of litigious and non-litigious matters, primarily of a major commercial nature. Bronwyn has significant experience and expertise in international commercial arbitration and trans-national disputes, both within Australia and offshore, particularly in Europe and Asia. She is skilled in the resolution of disputes under the Rules of the ICC, LCIA, SIAC and UNCITRAL.
Bronwyn’s practice also includes Trade Practices and major contractual disputes which involve litigation in the Federal and Supreme Courts, arbitration and mediation.
Bronwyn is a graded arbitrator.
Experience
Matters on which Bronwyn has been involved include:
- disputes between a United States-based company and large Australian company involved in arbitration proceedings in Los Angeles over the construction of an oil rig in the Timor Sea. This work was undertaken in parallel with the preparation of proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria arising from the same project
- a dispute over the construction of a multi-purpose pipeline in India, acting for an Australian company in ICC arbitration proceedings. The arbitration proceedings were conducted in parallel with civil proceedings in the Czech Republic, Italy, India and in Australia (both in the Supreme Court and the High Court of Australia)
- arbitration proceedings commenced in Singapore between a project manager and a government owned Singaporean entity over the installation of gas pipelines in Singapore
- mediation in Singapore arising from the construction of one aspect of Sun City • litigation and arbitration of disputes between several international parties arising from a major engineering, procurement and construction contract for a major processing plant in Australia, and
- disputes between Adshel and JCDecaux, the two largest street furniture providers in Australia. This dispute was the subject of protracted proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia and involved alleged breaches of the Trade Practices Act. Bronwyn’s experience includes a secondment to Clifford Chance and a short secondment in the Legal Directorate of Telstra Corporation Limited in Melbourne.
Bronwyn regularly appears as counsel in arbitration proceedings and has appeared before arbitral tribunals in Australia, France and Switzerland.
Professional background
Bronwyn has a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Monash University, Australia. She is admitted to practice in Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and Tasmania.
Bronwyn is an associate member of the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia and a member of the International Bar Association (Business Section), the Victorian Women Lawyers Association and Asialink. Bronwyn was the inaugural regional representative for Australasia for the Young International Arbitration Group of the London Court of International Arbitration.
In 2004, Bronwyn was appointed as a member of the Federal Attorney General’s International Legal Services Advisory Council. She is a member of the Executive of the Federal Litigation Section of the Law Council of Australia and the Federal Court Liaison Committee, and an inaugural co-chair and founder of the Australian Forum for International Arbitration.
