Current practice
Hamish has been a partner in the firm’s Commercial Litigation Group since 2005. Hamish practices in major contract and construction disputes.
He has the following experience:
- arbitrations and expert determinations,
- contract and construction disputes in the Supreme Courts of Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales, and
- ‘pre-litigation’ strategic advice work.
Hamish was recently listed in the 2011 AFR guide as a leading litigation lawyer in Queensland, and in the Chambers Global Guide as an ‘Up and comer’.
Hamish is the lead Freehills’ relationship partner for the Leighton Group, including the three contracting subsidiaries and the development subsidiary.
In major building and construction disputes, Hamish has acted for contractors, principals, financiers, and consultants and has experience with the range of issues and claims that can arise during the development and construction life cycle.
Experience
Hamish’s recent industry experience includes:
- acting for Thiess John Holland on the $5 billion Brisbane Airport Link project
- acting for Chevron Australia on upstream claims for the $52 billion Gorgon LNG project
- acting for Lend Lease against contractors and consultants arising from latent defects and geo-tech issues at a Brisbane development
- acting for Leighton Properties in Queensland Supreme Court proceedings regarding $3 million defective works claim
- acting for Thiess in a $100 million contract dispute with OneSteel regarding a magnetite beneficiation plant
- acting for Commonwealth Bank in relation to the Chatswood Interchange development project
- advising Mitsui in relation to ‘process plant’ disputes arising from the output performance of several water treatment plants in Victoria
- acting for United Group in a $90 million contract dispute in the Supreme Court of South Australia arising out of a blast furnace reline project
- advising Chevron in relation to s155 notices issued by the ACCC in respect of joint marketing at the North West Shelf project
- advising Thiess in relation to joint venture competition issues and disputes.

Hamish holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University.
