Experience
Darren’s practice focuses on commercial dispute resolution. He provides advice and representation in matters requiring strategic analysis.
He has acted for leading companies and governments in significant commercial disputes and investigations across a wide range of industry sectors and jurisdictions. He has experience in contract, energy and resources, insurance, insolvency, product liability, toxic torts (particularly environmental contamination), property, financial services, trade practices, superannuation and managed funds, as well as regulatory investigations and prosecutions.
Darren represents clients in all Australian jurisdictions, having been involved in many high profile court cases (including class actions) in Federal and State courts, royal commissions, inquests and proceedings before specialist tribunals. He is also experienced in the resolution of cross-border and international disputes, having been involved in arbitrations and court proceedings across the Asia-Pacific region (particularly Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea), as well as in Europe, North America and Africa.
Professional background
Darren is admitted to practise as both a solicitor and barrister in the Supreme Courts of Victoria and South Australia together with the Federal, Family and High Courts of Australia.
A graduate of the Flinders University of South Australia, Darren graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and was awarded several prizes, including the prizes for top graduating student, and top Honours dissertation. Darren joined Freehills in 1996 and in 2002, he obtained a Master of Laws specialising in international dispute resolution and equity from the University of Melbourne.
Darren is an active member of numerous professional organisations. He has published articles and spoken at industry conferences. He also presents regularly to clients on topical legal areas relevant to their businesses. Since 2005, Darren has served as a Member of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Administrative Law. In 2008, Darren served as a Member of the Victorian Chapter Committee of the Australian Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators.
