A new ‘Icon’ at Freehills: Tony Damian wins ‘Dealmaker of the Year’ at the Lawyers Weekly Icon Awards 2010

Freehills Corporate M&A partner Tony Damian was named ‘Dealmaker of the Year’ at the inaugural Lawyers Weekly Icon Awards, held at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art on Thursday 5 August.

Lawyers Weekly reported that it was ‘Damian’s role in some of the biggest deals in the Asia-Pacific region over the past 12 months, including advising the Canadian Eldorado Gold Corporation in relation to its $8 billion merger with local outfit Sino Gold Mining Ltd, Australia's largest scrip M&A deal of 2009. Damian also lead the Freehills team on the deal that came under the most intense scrutiny from the Takeovers Panel, the proposed merger between Gloucester Coal and Whitehaven Coal.’

Freehills CEO Gavin Bell said, ‘It was fantastic to see a strong showing by Freehills at the Icon Awards.’

Freehills was represented as a finalist in four of the ten categories, including Bob Baxt for the Life Achievement Award.

Freehills received Highly Commended recognition in their other two nominated categories including People & Development Director, Gareth Bennett for Talent Manager of the Year and Pro Bono Counsel & Executive Director of the Freehills Foundation, Annette Bain for the Pro Bono Initiative Award.

The Icon Awards recognise excellence, innovation and leadership in the Australian legal industry.
