Steven Penglis is a senior member of the national Litigation team.
Experience
Steven provides advice to, and appears as counsel in the Federal and Supreme Courts for public and private companies, professional firms and individuals representing a wide range of industries and covering a wide range of areas.
Steven specialises in complex corporate litigation and in advising and representing companies and company directors with respect to all aspects of corporate law. He has extensive experience dealing with regulatory authorities, particularly ASIC.
Well known in Perth’s business and legal circles, Steven is acknowledged (nationally) as an ‘outstanding’ and ‘aggressive’ litigator. Steven’s corporate clients include Consolidated Minerals Limited, Murchison Metals Ltd, the Kiernan Group of Companies and the Woss Group of Companies. Individuals for whom Steven acts include Janet Holmes á Court and Julian Grill.
The reputation he has earned within the legal profession also sees Steven being regularly briefed by law firms other than Freehills, to provide advice or undertake litigation on behalf of a client or for themselves. It is also reflected by his election to the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia (of which he was Chairman between 2002 and 2007) and his election as a member of the Council of the Law Society of Western Australia. Steven is also a part-time Senior Member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and Convenor of the Law Society’s Courts Committee.
Professional background
A graduate of the University of New South Wales, Steven has degrees in Bachelor of Jurisprudence (B Juris, 1980) and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB, 1982).
Steven commenced practice in the Sydney office of Freehills in 1983 and was transferred to the Perth office in 1986. He was admitted to partnership in 1987.
