Current practice

Jay advises clients on all aspects of commercial property law with experience in property development work, projects in the hotel and accommodation industry from site acquisition through to the eventual sale of the completed development. As part of these transactions, Jay advises clients on a wide range of issues including major property leases, acquisition and ownership structures, management agreements and complex title issues.

Industry experience

Negotiations of property development documentation, major property leases, acquisitions and sale of CBD buildings through to regional shopping centres and dealing with complex lease and sublease issues are all typical of Jay’s area of practice.

Some recent transactions include:

  • acquisition of the Carlton Hotel group for $328.25 million
  • acquisition of the Travelodge group of hotels in Australia
  • development, documentation and takeout finance for a serviced apartment project at King Street Wharf, Sydney
  • leasing up and sale by tender of a landmark North Sydney building
  • joint venture for the acquisition of development rights to the Jones Bay Finger Wharf (including a 20 year lease over surrounding berthage), 99 year lease from NSW Government
  • adviser to Singapore Government Investment Corporation on the acquisition of the Westin Hotel and GPO retail components of 1 Martin Place, Sydney
  • adviser of the lessee/operator on the development of the hotel component of the Perth Convention and Entertainment Centre, and
  • development of custom designed industrial facilities for specific end users.

Professional background

Jay is a member of the New South Wales Travel & Tourism Division of the General Practice Section of the Law Council of Australia as well as the Property Council of Australia, Property Law Committee and Taxation Committee. He was admitted to practice as a solicitor in 1980 and has a Diploma in Law (SAB). Jay joined Freehills in 1985.
