Rick is a senior member of the national energy and resources team.Industry experience
Rick has, over 25 years, developed a very wide practice. His specific areas of expertise include resource and energy developments, contracts and contractual disputes, environmental law, government relations and management contracts.
Prior to joining Freehills, Rick spent eight years with a major international resources group. He was involved in the construction, development and operation of large-scale mining projects in Western Australia, including gold, bauxite, mineral sands, coal, diamonds and iron ore.
Rick has had substantial commercial experience, having been: project controller of a project management team, commercial legal manager of an operating mine; and having acted as counsel on a wide range of matters including joint ventures and management agreements.
Rick has been involved in the development, construction and operation of numerous mines including Argyle, Brockman, Cowal, Channar, Eastern Range, Marandoo, Nummuldi, Yandicoogina and West Angelas mines.
He is well experienced in large-scale infrastructure projects including iron, gas, and steel plants, mining plant, port infrastructure and operations; accommodation; contractor run operations; power stations and railways.
His experience extends to international marketing and shipping agreements as well as major supply contracts.
Professional background
Rick graduated in law (B Juris, LLB) from the University of Western Australia in 1976 and also holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (1989, UWA). He joined Freehills in 1988 and was admitted to partnership in January 1990.Rick was the head of Freehills' energy and resources group and has also served on the Freehills National Board.
