Current practice

Ted is a consultant in the Perth office of Freehills and has been with the firm since 1982 apart from a short period as a national partner at KPMG Legal.

Industry experience

Ted has a multi-faceted practice in the commercial area essentially focused on property development of all types. His particular areas of expertise include property developments, major retail developments, commercial developments, mixed use resort and residential developments, joint venture agreements, development agreements and major leasing transactions.

His experience in the sale and purchase of property includes various forms of licensed premises, including wineries and vineyards, retirement villages as well as major retail and commercial complexes.

Ted has also acquired a knowledge of the manner in which Crown Land can be utilised in infrastructure projects including locating them on 'greenfields' sites and guiding clients (both private and public sector) through the regulatory maze that often faces them.

Through the course of his professional experience, Ted has been able to bring his negotiating skills (honed by three visits to the Harvard Law School for that purpose) to achieve the outcomes that commercial clients seek when undertaking their transactions.

In 2002, Ted was recognised by the Australian Property Institute for his services to the property industry and in 2003, he was recognised by his peers as Perth’s leading property lawyer being the first year in which the Western Australia Business News conducted that award.

Professional background

Ted is currently the state government appointed chair of the Legal Costs Committee.

He has been an elected member of the Legal Practice Board until he retired from that role and is a past president of the Law Society of Western Australia.

Away from the law, Ted is the Hon Secretary of the AH Crawford Cancer Treatment Society, a private charity devoted to assisting the needs of cancer sufferers and their carers, a member of the Executive of the Hale Foundation, the immediate past national president of the Australia Malaysia Business Council which he founded in Western Australia and a director of a sporting team competing in national competition.
